The formation of religious character and attitudes of tolerance is a primary objective of Islamic education within the context of Indonesia’s multicultural society. Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers play a strategic role not only as instructors but also as mentors and role models in the internalization of inclusive religious values. This study aims to describe the role of PAI teachers in shaping students’ religious character and tolerance in school environments consisting of diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. The research method employed is a literature review by analyzing various relevant sources, including journals, books, and contemporary Islamic education research reports. The findings indicate that the development of religious character and tolerance can be achieved through teachers’ moral exemplification, the application of dialogic and collaborative learning methods, and the cultivation of a school culture that respects diversity. Furthermore, PAI teachers act as mediators in resolving conflicts and as facilitators of religious activities that foster empathy and mutual respect among students. Therefore, the success of forming religious character and tolerance is determined not only by the curriculum but also by the pedagogical competence, personal integrity, and exemplary behavior of PAI teachers in their daily lives
