Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the syllabic method in improving early reading skills among children aged 5–6 years using a case study approach. The syllabic method was selected because it introduces reading through syllable recognition, which serves as a more accessible phonological unit for young learners compared to individual letters. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with the teacher, and analysis of children’s learning documentation. The findings show a noticeable improvement in early reading ability among most children, particularly in recognizing syllables, blending syllables into simple words, and increasing motivation and engagement during learning activities. These results are consistent with previous studies indicating that the syllabic method is effective for developing initial reading skills when supported by engaging and interactive learning media. Furthermore, the effectiveness of this method is influenced by consistent practice, gradual teacher guidance, and instructional strategies that align with the developmental characteristics of young children. This study suggests that the syllabic method is a relevant and effective alternative for early reading instruction in early childhood education settings. However, further research with a larger sample size is needed to strengthen the empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness
